Stay Connected Using a Webcam
Feature, Lifestyle — By troth on May 4, 2011Once upon a time, moving away from friends and family meant relying on the occasional long-distance phone call or letters to stay in touch. These days, however, new technology makes it easier than ever to stay in touch face to face. Webcams can be a particularly good way to chat with loved ones from a distance. With just your laptop, a webcam, and an online chat program (and maybe a microphone, depending on your computer system), you can establish a great way to connect with people who no longer live close by.
1. Getting a webcam
Webcams come in two ways: stand-alone devices you attach to your computer, or built-in features. Many newer laptops include them. If your laptop includes a small circle at the top center of the monitor, perhaps with the word “webcam” next to it, then you have a built-in device. If not, you can purchase a webcam at most retail stores, including Wal-Mart, Target, or Best Buy.
Webcams vary in price, depending on the model. Most are under $50, with some as low as $15. To get tips on how to find the best webcam for you, check out sites that review webcams, such as http://reviews.cnet.com/webcams/ or http://www.consumersearch.com/webcam-reviews/reviews. Additionally, talk to store staff members to learn about webcam features or whether you’ll need other accessories like a microphone. However, many newer model laptops include microphones that will pick up your voice without problem.
2. Setting up your webcam
Follow the directions that come with your device to set up the webcam and test it out. You’ll also want to take time to practice with the webcam so that you can adjust the screen tilt, your distance from the monitor and camera, and the location of the camera. (Many webcams attach to the top of your monitor; others can sit alone nearby.) Also take the time to decide where you will set up your laptop when you use a webcam, if possible. If multiple people will use it, test the webcam with each person.
3. Finding chat services
To use your webcam, you’ll need to use an online chat program. The person with whom you’ll be chatting will need to sign up for the same program, and you will need their username in order to connect. Skype is perhaps the best-known program for connecting with others via webcam. This is a free service, and you can learn more about it by visiting http://about.skype.com/. Other programs include Gmail’s built-in chat feature (enable video chatting) or iChat for individuals who use Apple products.
4. Go mobile?
If you have a smartphone, you might have another way to connect via webcam on your phone. Newer-model phones like Droid devices and the iPhone, as well as some new tablet computers like the iPad2, also include built-in cameras and chat programs so you can connect with others. In some cases, the person with whom you’re speaking will also need to have the same equipment or at least the same chat service.
5. Enjoy!
Chatting with others via webcam can be a fun experience. Remember that practicing does help, and sometimes you might encounter slow video images if someone’s Internet service is running slow. If you encounter problems, don’t get frustrated. Take a step back to see what might be wrong and try again.
