Organize Your Job Search with Social Bookmarking
Feature, Social Networking — By troth on July 26, 2011Social bookmarking tools are a great solution to help you organize your website bookmarks, access them across multiple computers and mobile devices, and share and discover links with other people (the “social” part of social bookmarking). It’s also a clever way to organize the many job search sites you’ll be frequenting.
In general, social bookmarking tools are easy to use. Originally begun as a way for users to collect their bookmarks through a website – which makes it easy to access links anywhere, not just on one computer – social bookmarking tools now offer more than just a place to collect and share links. For example, social bookmarking tools now allow users to highlight text on websites, save images of web pages for future access (useful if a site ceases to exist for any reason), and create notes about bookmarks you’ve collected.
If you’re a current Facebook or Twitter user, you’ve probably noticed that many of your contacts post links to articles, images, and all sorts of websites. These sorts of social network sites can act as one type of social bookmarking platform, but are a bit informal in nature than recognized social bookmarking sites like Delicious and Diigo. The benefit to sites designed for social bookmarking is that you’ll have an easier time organizing, finding, and retrieving bookmarks – not to mention sharing them.
Two of the most well-known social bookmarking platforms are Delicious and Diigo. Both offer similar features:
Delicious

Once of the oldest social bookmarking sites available (formerly known as del.icio.us), Delicious offers a basic interface for maintaining and finding links. You can tag your bookmarks to help you find them easily by topic, or search other users’ public links to find additional website resources that may interest you.
Diigo

Diigo operates similarly to Delicious, but has recently become more robust with its options. In addition to allowing users to maintain and share bookmarks, Diigo also offers users the ability to highlight text on webpages, create notes and sticky notes, and even organize images and documents.
Whether you’re in the process of compiling company research as part of your job search, learning more about a new community, planning a project, or simply want to maintain links for your own personal entertainment, social bookmarking tools can be an excellent time-saving resource.
