Choosing the Right References

At some point during the interview process, potential employers will ask for a few references to verify that all the great things you said about yourself are, in fact, true. Have you decided who you will put down?
Here are a few reminders to ensure you get the glowing reviews you deserve.
- Ask your references if you can use them as references. Be certain that the potential employer doesn’t contact your references before you do. It is a common courtesy to ask for their permission first. This will also give them time to think about what they will say about you.
- Use references that are relevant to the job you are applying for. If you have worked in a variety of industries, be sure to include at least one reference that can speak to your abilities in the industry you are now targeting. This will help the potential employer to see the success you have brought to similar organizations.
- Avoid using personal contacts, such as friends and family. Of course your loved ones are going to say wonderful things about you. To warrant more credibility, include individuals who have a strong working relationship with you. If you are having trouble thinking of references, consider using former bosses, co-workers, professors, or coaches.
- Make sure your references are easy to contact. Your interview went great, the employer reached out to your references, and now they are waiting to hear back. And waiting. And waiting. Don’t frustrate employers by including references who are hard to reach or who won’t return the call in a timely manner. Also, remember to verify with your references which number they prefer to be contacted at.
- Don’t forget to say thank you. Now that your former boss/colleague/professor/coach as taken the time to assist you, remember to show your appreciation with a simple phone call or thank you note.
